Conversation with Anji Dickson about integrating people, the planet, and business prosperity.
Steps to Recovery Homes and Konnect Wellness Center‘s COO- Chief Operating Officer Anji Dickson is a purpose-driven leader who works at the intersection of recovery, community well-being, and green systems change. She has a unique perspective on how people, planet, and prosperity can be balanced within a second, renewable model, with a career that spans senior leadership and a deeply personal journey through recovery. Through her work, Anji shifts the focus of sustainability away from just economic action and emphasizes healing, accessibility, and long-term resilience for both individuals and communities.
1. How do you incorporate sustainability, which is defined as a systematic approach to balancing social, economic, and economic needs into your business?
We promote sustainability by using a model based on the principles of people, planet, and profit, which balance economic, social, and economic well-being. Our goal is to give those who lack economic and cultural resources access to recovery. By providing cost-effective, proactive, and integrated recovery services, we lower the long-term societal costs of neglected mental health and substance abuse issues. We empower people to reallocate resources toward housing, education, employment, and family stability by providing attainable care and integrated healing, which promote balance, stability, and well-being.
2. What gave you your AHA Moment?
During my own recovery journey, I experienced that” aha” moment. I realized that the lifestyle I had been chasing was the opposite of what I actually wanted: perfection, financial success, and my definition of” success.” It caused me to feel isolated from the world, the community, and myself. Everything changed as a result of helping others in recovery. I support the development of a green model that is grounded in balance, accessibility, and restoration, and I have embraced people, planet, and profit.
3. How, in your opinion, does a company’s approach to climate responsibility be truly shaped by a female perspective?
I was inspired from a young age to” save the planet,” bringing in trash at college parties and recycling in parking lots. My career as a female executive focused on power and profitability for 35 years. I now lead in recovery while putting a focus on long-term well-being, informed collaboration, intuition, and empathy. I think business can be regenerative—restoring, uplifting, and inspiring, and that responsibility and profit are at the heart of it. Leadership is measured by both wealth and the state of the world we create. I see stewardship as strength and leadership as care for the communities we create, respecting the interdependence of people, planet, and prosperity, choosing long-term effects, making informed decisions, and empowering my team to use their strengths, and leadership as care for the communities we build.
4. What was the most important green milestone your company has recently, and how did it get there?
Instead of treating them individually, one of our most significant sustainability milestones has been fostering economic, environmental, and social sustainability at the same time. Through the United States Department of Agriculture, we were able to invest in long-term infrastructure, including renewable energy, thanks to loans and grants. These systems needed persistence and training to navigate them. The shift improved our operations, reduced our carbon footprint, and aligned our spaces with our healing philosophy. Additionally, we expanded our resale store Miracles Happen into an economic and workforce development initiative that recycles donated furniture, reduces landfill waste, sells inexpensive goods, and provides clients with sensible skills, confidence, and purpose.
Konnect Wellness, our outpatient facility, was established to integrate alumni ownership and leadership opportunities that promote purpose and financial stability. It is accessible, affordable, and visible care. The Connection Room, an event center with a biophilic design background, has most just focused on nature, light, and connection while earning money to support our mission. These milestones demanded perseverance, collaboration, and vision, and they marked our transition from a recovery organization to a restorative ecosystem that restores people, community, and the environment.
5. What is a widespread myth that you are constantly working to discredit about going green in your industry?
A popular misconception about “going green” is that it only involves maintaining office buildings. Real sustainability is about restoring people and acknowledging the interdependence of human and environmental health, even though energy efficiency, renewable, lighting, and water conservation are important. To be environmentally responsible, powerful communities, family stability, and mental health are essential, and caring for both contributes to the development of a regenerative model. Sustainable development includes promoting available wellness so that financial strain does not prevent care, promoting healthy light, exterior spaces, and other elements that support nervous system regulation, as well as teaching clients to reuse resources, reduce waste, and develop life skills. As we work to end cycles of trauma and financial instability, cultural sustainability strengthens families, restores relationships, and assists people in moving from isolation to belonging, employment, and community involvement.
6. What words of wisdom would you offer to the second generation of female business owners who want to establish a business that places a high value on both profit and the planet?
My advice to the upcoming generation of female business owners is to act with purpose, create with courage, and have faith in yourself. Never let fear interfere with your goals, head with passion, and surround yourself with a friendly tribe of women. You must trust your intuition.
