Summers in Arizona demand a lot of our attention and a lot of our water. Pools become one of the several reliable places to cool down, decompress, and stay engaged outdoors as temperatures rise past 110°F. The water that sits in our backyards and community facilities now carries more responsibility than it did in a state where every gallon is negotiated between cities, farms, and a shrinking Colorado River allocation. The issue is not whether or not we should have pools in the desert, but rather how to maintain them without conflicting the conservation objectives that the rest of the region is fighting for.  ,

Our nanobubble technology, which is based in Gilbert, is currently removing the approximately three million gallons of water from Revel Surf in Mesa. Our technology inherently improves water at the particle level, leading to cleaner water and quantifiable operational savings.

Our method uses ozone and oxygen to create bubbles that are so tiny that they act more like dissolved oxidizers and lessen the need for chlorine to keep water safe. Revel Surf noted advantages like less irritation in the eyes, less dried-out skin, and a notably weaker “pool smell.”
Large chlorination affects what ultimately leaves the facility as well as swimmers. Direct or indirect, backwash water, drained pool water, and runoff from seriously treated underwater systems all make their way back to provincial treatment infrastructures that are already under strain from population growth and drought-driven demand. A less-discussed method of conservation is one that we keep in mind: reducing the chemical load at the source results in less chemical byproducts that treatment facilities process up.
We’ve been holding back something for a while as we see that same core technology being used at the Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., a very diverse setting on the other side of the country, facing its own water quality issues. This technology is evolving into the norm, not the rule. And more broadly speaking, in terms of water treatment, where the goal is never to mask a problem with more chemistry but to remove the need for so many chemistry in the first place.  ,
We care about that distinction. Water is a living system, both biologically and medically active, that reacts to what you put in it. It is not an inert substance that needs to be dosed and disinfected into submission. We’ve always worked with that, no against it: we add oxygen and ozone because they support the water’s unique natural reactive processes, not because we’re trying to overpower it with something unusual. The end result is water that is healthier because it is healthier, no because it has been chemically subdued, and that benefits everyone in the downstream.

Outdoor pools are not the pinnacle of this technology, in our opinion. We’re already looking into how the identical oxygen and ozone nanobubble process can be used to treat agricultural water systems, clean water sources, and restore lakes and ponds. This is a fundamental part of how we approach our work; it’s not a novelty that wants to make back pools smell better; it’s an early step toward restoring water systems as ecosystems worth protecting rather than managing chemical issues.  ,
A shift to sustainably fresh water is important to us in a state where hot summers will continue and water budgets will continue to be tight. Pools are not going away, and they shouldn’t because they are one of the several ways that Arizona residents can get rid of heat. We are working to ensure that the water inside them and the water that ultimately leaves them can be a part of the solution rather than a strain.  ,
